Observation

This was a fairly popular question and was attempted by many candidates. Many of them failed to answer it well as they could not differentiate between the effects of the British conquest and missionary activities, colonial rule and legitimate trade. However, some candidates were able to satisfactorily discuss the positive and negative effects of the conquest and scored good marks. In order to get good grade, candidates were expected to mention the following points:

(i) The British dominated the civil service and held some key posts;

1. It led to the development of industries such as mining;
2. Modern transportation and communication systems were introduced;
3. European culture and civilization spread; and people began to wear European clothes etc;
4. It led to the colonisation of the country.
