Observation

This was also a popular question and was fairly answered by the candidates. Most candidates  who answered this question understood its demand but many of them only listed the relevant points. The following points were expected to be mentioned and explained by candidates to get good marks:
           
(a)        (i)         Indirect Rule.
            (ii)        Divide and rule.
            (iii)       Direct Rule.

(b)        (i)         The traditional institutions in Northern Nigeria were highly favourable to      
the introduction of the system of Indirect Rule in the region e.g. emirs.
(ii)        The taxation system in Northern Nigeria favoured the introduction of Indirect Rule.
(iii)       The presence of very few educated elite that were easily absorbed into the                   system helped the successful implementation of the system.
(iv)       The existing judicial system based on the teaching of Quran helped to keep the northern people perpetually loyal to their emirs and the colonial administration.
(v)        Non-interference of the British with the religion of the people in the north.
(vi)       The prevention of the area from outside influence e.g. Southern Nigeria,     
the Maghreb and the Middle east.
