Observation

This was one of the most popular questions but was poorly answered by the candidates. The question required the candidates to highlight the consequences of the 1993 General Elections conducted by General Ibrahim Babangida. A few of the candidates got the question right and advanced appropriate answers but a number of them raised issues related to the 1999 and 2015 elections. The under listed points were expected to be discussed by candidates in order to get good marks:

(i)         There were mass protests especially in the south where the people showed their resentment over the annulment of the election.
(ii)        Some educated elite formed a group known as Campaign for Democracy (CD) and NADECO which sensitized the masses on the annulment
(iii)       General Babangida, the Head of State was forced to step aside.
(iv)       An interim Federal Eexecutive Council, headed by chief Ernest Shonekan was set up to steer the affairs of the country.
(v)        Major General Sani Abacha who was the Secretary of Defence later toppled the government.
(vi)       Economic sanctions were imposed on Nigeria by France, USA, Canada and Britain.
(vii)      Many Nigerian protesters lost their lives as a result of brutality meted out on them by the police.
(viii)     The annulment stained the integrity of General Babangida and he lost his popularity among the masses.
(ix)       Some workers embarked on a five-day strike action to register their protest.
