Only a few candidates attempted this question. Most of the candidates were unable to identify Reverend Hammond as the black clergy; some called him Bigger and others diverted and told stories of Bigger and Mary Dalton’s visit.
The following points should be well developed by the candidates:
i. Identification of Reverend Hammond as the black clergy.
ii. His visit to Bigger in his cell.
iii. The impact of the visit on Bigger.
iv. The irony of the visit.
v. The contrast between Reverend Hammond and Jan.
Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
