Question 6
What have you learned about black life from the conversation between Bigger and Gus at the entrance to the pool room?
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question. However, it was evident that candidates had not read the text as many of them regarded Gus as a white man and narrated the plights of blacks. They also could not make references to the texts.
The following points should be well developed by the candidates:
i. Background to the conversation.
ii. The segregated lives of black people.
iii. The white power structure which excludes blacks.
iv. The stifling of black aspiration.
v. The restricted movement of the blacks.
Bigger’s solution/Gus’s resignation to fate.
Candidates’ performance was poor.
