Question 5
RICHARD WRIGHT: Native Son
Comment on Bigger’s last moments with Max.
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question. They were, however, unable to discuss Max’s defence and Bigger’s death sentence.
The following points should be well developed by the candidates:
- Statement of the theme.
- The trail of Bigger; his crime and punishment.
- The plea of his lawyer, Max.
- Bigger’s declaration of no regrets for his action.
- The significance of the moments between client and lawyer.
Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
