Question 10
Discuss the predicament of the modern African in Awoonor’s “The Anvil and the Hammer”.
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question. However, many of the candidates gave a general overview of the poem. They failed to meet the demands of the question as they could not show the dilemma faced by the modern African in the poem.
The required answers should include:
- The violence of the contact which produces the new African.
- The flimsy glories of the new culture.
- The tenuous, but resilient state of the African culture.
- The plea for a restoration which demands ritual cleansing and which has not been forthcoming.
- Failure to reconnect; which ends in despair.
Candidates’ performance was poor.
