Observation

Very few candidates attempted this question.  However, most of the candidates appeared not to be familiar with both characters, hence their inability to discuss their attitude to the Younger family.

The required answers should include:

• The intermingling of race and class complicating issues as represented by George Murchison and Karl Lindner – one black, one white.
• George’s disdain for his African heritage on seeing Beneatha in African costume and his snobbish attitude towards Walter’s attempt to fraternise with him.
• George’s show of knowledge about western civilization and social class.
• Lindner being a white racist demanding that the Youngers consider not moving into their apartment at Clybourne Park.
• Lindner’s insensitivity to the plight of the Youngers and Murchison’s condescending disregard of the Youngers’ sensibility, which link the two as racist.

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
