Question 8
OLIVER GOLDSMITH: She Stoops to Conquer
How do Young Marlow and Hastings view Tony Lumpkin in the play?
Observation
Many candidates attempted this question. However, many of them gave a mere narration of how Tony seemed to mislead Marlow and Young Hastings without highlighting the result of the misdirection.
Candidates were expected to discuss the following points:
- The journey of young Marlow and George Hastings to the Hardcastles’
- The preconceived notion of Tony Lumpkin as a spoilt child.
- Hastings’ modified perception of Tony who hatches a plan for Hastings and Constance to elope.
- Hastings’ perception of Tony as a traitor and loss of confidence in Tony.
- Young Marlow’s unchanging perception of Tony as a spoilt child, though Hastings’ opinion changes.
Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
