QUESTION 2: Either 

With reference to Trumpet Concerto (2nd movement) by Joseph Haydn:

a) In what period was the music composed?

(b) What is concerto?

(c) Quote the first four bars of the opening melody (of the trumpet part).

(d) List any four terms or signs used in the piece

(e) State the structural form of the piece.

OR

With reference to Ahekoo by E. Pappoe Thompson:

(a) State the nationality of the composer

(b) In what key/time was the piece written?

(c) State any four compositional devices used by the composer

(d) Name other keys through which the music passes.

(e) For what media was the music composed?

(f) What is the overall form of the piece?

(g) Mention any two contemporaries of E. Pappoe Thompson.

OBSERVATIONS

Candidates were expected to study the set-piece and respond according to the questions. However, most of the candidates performed poorly in this question and the most apparent cause of the poor performance was non-availability of the prescribed set-pieces. Candidates should have responded to the question in the following ways:

(a) Classical

(b) A composition for a solo instrument and the orchestra

(c) 

OR

 

 

 

(d) (i) Andante, fz, cresc, mf, p, f, rall, Slurs, tie, pedal point, staccato, acciaccatura

(e) A: BA (Ternary or incipient binary)

Or

ABA (Ternary)

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor. They could not understand the signs and terms as used in the passage. Candidates were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:

(a) Ghanaian

(b) Key D major, Time signature

(c) Sequences, counterpoint, tonic / dominant pedals, syncopation, hemiola, two/three part counterpoint in the middle section, grace notes (acciaccatura), extensive use of speech rhythm (Sprechstimme), tutti, fugal, trio, duet

(e) Voice

(f) Through Composed
