  1. State four ways in which the circle in hockey game is important              [4 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) some of the candidates could not state offences that could lead to the award of a penalty shot in a hockey game. In part (b) many candidates did not understand the importance of the striking circle in hockey game.
The expected answers are as follow:

2 (a)    OFFENCES THAT LEAD TO THE AWARD OF PENALTY SHOT IN A HOCKEY GAME

  • holding the stick of an attacker who is about to score
  • when a defender/goalkeeper raises the stick above the shoulder level within the striking circle/area
  • when defender stops the ball intentionally with any part of the body within the striking circle/area
  • playing the ball dangerously within the striking circle/area by a defender
  • charging on/holding an attacker who is about to score
  • a defender committing an obstruction within the striking circle/area
  • persistent breaching of the goal line rule by defenders during penalty corners
  • interference with an opponent who is about to score/explained
  • an attacking player prevented by the goalkeeper from scoring/explained

(b)    IMPORTANCE OF THE STRIKING CIRCLE IN HOCKEY
-           the area within which the ball must be struck/hit by an attacker to score a goal
-           the part of the field outside which all players (whether defending or attacking)
must remain when corners are being taken

  • the part of the field within which the goalkeeper may kick the ball/keepers boundary explained
  •  the area within which offences committed by the defender leading to the award of  penalty shot can be committed
  •  the area where free hits are taken when an attacker hits the ball over the
      opponent’s goal line
