Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fairly good. In part (a)(i) many candidates could not correctly state reasons why the ancient Olympic Games collapsed. In part (a)(ii) many candidates did well by giving reasons for the revival of the modern Olympic Games. In part (b) many candidates correctly stated functions of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa.
The expected answers are as follow:
4. (a) (i) REASONS FOR THE COLLAPSE OF THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES
- the religious aspect attached to the games/the worship and sacrifices to zeus declined
- it became secularized and the moral standards of the competition declined/bribery and corruption became rampant
- it became internationalized/originally restricted to freeborn citizens of Greek descent and adherents of the Olympian faith
- the sacred truce which had sustained the game was violated/the peloponmesian war of 431 BC led to the destruction /vandalization of the Olympic games village at Elis
(ii) REASONS FOR THE REVIVAL OF THE MODERN OLYMPICS
- as a result of the of the revival of the tests for athletics there was need for a common games competition/healthy competitions among nations.
- promote the development and moral qualities which are the bases of sport.
- because of the role of sports in education/educating young people through sports
- to promote friendship among young people
- it seeks to spread the Olympics principles to create international good will/international political stability
- the discovery and excavation of the temple of Zeus
(b) FUNCTIONS OF THE SUPREME COUNCIL FOR SPORTS IN AFRICA
- organization of the All African Games and similar competition in the continent
- it takes major decisions in the registering of Countries and their athletes for various events.
- promotion of sports in Africa
- it selects the venue for the various competitions which are rotated from Country to Country
- it appoints qualified officials for each sporting event
- it takes far-reaching decisions on matters relating to the discipline of Countries and athletes/promote peace among countries in Africa
- it protects the interest of Africa in World sports
- it awards cups/trophies / medals/ certificates to outstanding teams / athletes / countries
