Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. 

In part (a) candidates could not correctly classify the 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and
10,000m into middle or long distance race, only few candidates got the answers correctly. 

In part (b) (i) and (ii) candidates correctly named facilities and missiles in athletics. 

In part (c) (i) candidates also could not state instances in which a discus thrower commits a fault,
in (ii) candidates correctly named the types of baton change in relay race and in (iii) candidates could not state rules for the use of baton in relay race.

In part (d) candidates could not correctly explain why hurdles is considered a track event.

The expected answers are as follows:

2 (a)    CLASSIFICATION OF EVENTS INTO MIDDLE AND LONG DISTANCE RACES
-           800m – middle distance race
-           1,500m – middle distance race
-           3,000m – long distance race
-           5,000m – long distance race
-           10,000m – long distance race

(b)(i) FACILITIES IN ATHLETICS
-           The tracks/oval
-           long/triple jump pit/discus/shot put/javelin   /hammer throwing area/sector
-           steeple chase/ water jump area.

(ii)  MISSILES USED IN ATHLETICS
-           javelin
-           discus
-           the shot
-           hammer

  (c)(i) INSTANCES IN WHICH A DISCUS THROWER COMMITS A FAULT

            If the thrower
-           touches the lines of the circle
-           steps the ground outside the line with any part of the body
-           touches the top of the stopboard
-           if the discus lands outside the throwing area/sector
-           leaves the circle before the implement lands
-           leaves the circle from the front half
-           places a check mark within the throwing sector
-           wears hand gloves/tapes the finger(s).                      

(c) (ii) TYPES OF BATON EXCHANGE IN RELAY RACE

      (iii) RULES FOR THE USE OF BATON IN RELAY RACE

-           baton must be carried in the hand throughout the race
-           it should not be thrown but passed
-           start and finish a relay race with baton in hand
-           it must be passed within the change-over zone/box
-           the baton must not touch the ground or the line at the start of the race
-           the length of the baton must not be more than 30cm
-           the baton must be a smooth hollow tube

      (d) EXPLANATION WHY HURDLE RACE IS A TRACK EVENT  

-           Hurdle race is considered a track event because
-           it involves running/it is a running event
