Candidates’ weaknesses include:
- Inability to write extensively on the chosen topics. They wrote far below the required 300 words;
- Inability to approach the argumentative essay properly, they did not balance their arguments;
- Carelessness as regards the use of modern Yoruba orthography;
- Inability to use tone-marks appropriately;
- Inability to indicate the question numbers attempted and in some cases, writing incorrect numbers;
- Inability to write good Yoruba and correct spelling of terms;
- Inappropriate use of punctuation marks;
- Lack of in-depth knowledge or poor background in phonology;
- Shallow knowledge of the set texts;
- Illegible handwriting.
Suggested Remedies
- The use of Yoruba as a means of communication should be encouraged;
- Students should be encouraged to buy the recommended textbooks;
- Candidates should imbibe the habit of studying the set texts thoroughly;
- Candidates should prepare and equip themselves well with the knowledge and correct use of punctuation marks;
- Teachers should give special attention to the identified areas of candidates’ weaknesses in their teaching.
