  4. (d) (i)  Describe how specimen C is used. [5 marks]
  5. (ii) State two maintenance practices for specimen C.  [2 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was fairly attempted by the candidates.  In 1(a - b), most of the Candidates were able to identify specimens A (Ear notcher), B(Egg tray) and  C(Burdizzo) and name the farm animals that specimen A(Ear notcher) could be used on.  However, in 1(c –di), majority of them could neither state the uses of specimen B(Egg tray) nor describe how specimen C(Burdizzo) is used. Although, most of the candidates were able to state the maintenance practices for specimen C(Burdizzo) as required in 1(d)(ii).

  The expected answers include:

1(c)                  Uses of Specimen B (Egg tray)
            -           Protection of eggs from cracking

  •       It is used for proper storage of eggs
  •       For transporting eggs
  •       For the sale of eggs
  •       For sorting/holding/packing/picking eggs
  •       Used for setting of eggs

      (d) (i)         How Specimen C (Burdizzo) is used

  • Restrain the animal
  •      Locate the spermatic cord
  •      Work the spermatic cord and blood vessels  to one side
  •      Clamp using the burdizzo at a point above the testes
  •      Apply force/crush with both hands for a few seconds
  •      Repeat the clamping 1- 2cm above the first point

Disinfect the impressions made with the burdizzo/Disinfect the points of Clamping
