(i)    Define agriculture.                                                        [2 marks]

a. State five differences between commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture. [5marks]

b. State three merits and three demerits of using animal power on the farm.          [3 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was popular with the candidates. In l(a)(i & ii), majority of the candidates were able to define agriculture and list the branches of agriculture. Also in I (b), many candidates could state the differences between commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture.

  • However, in I(c), some candidates were unable to state the merits and demerits of using animal power on the farm.
  • The expected answers include:
  • Merits of using animal power on the farm
  • Animals provide good traction even under difficult conditions
  • Animals can pull loads that are many times heavier than those the farmers can carry
  • Animals have higher output compared to humans
  • Maintenance costs are comparatively lower than those of machines Using animals does not require high technical knowledge
  • Animals provide a source of meat after exceeding their useful working life Animal wastes return to the soil as fertilizers
  • Animals can work for longer periods than man
  • Animals are ecologically friendly
  • Reduces drudgery/makes work easy
  • Demerits of using animal power on the farm Animals are prone to diseases
  • Animals may be difficult to control/aggressive
  • Animals are slow in their operations compared to machines Animals cannot cover large areas of land unlike machine They require continuous attention whether working or not They suffer fatigue as humans
