Question 1

A series of experiments were conducted on the three main types of soil labelled A,
Band C to determine their porosity, water holding capacity and pH. The results
obtained are as shown in the table below:

(a) Identify the soil types labelled A,B,C.                                                                   [3 marks]
(b) If 100cm3 of water was poured onto each type, determine the water holding
capacity of each of the soil types labelled A,B,C.                                                 [3 marks]
(c) Interpret the pH value of each soil type as given in the table.                                [3 marks]
(d) Which of the three soil types is likely to be most productive? Give two reasons
for your answer.                                                                                                  [3 marks ]

(e) (i) Which of the soil types A, B, and C is likely to be least productive? [1 mark]
(ii) Suggest two ways of improving the least productive soil. [2 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was popular with the candidates and their performance was excellent. In question 1 (a-c), majority of the candidates could identify the soil types, determine the water holding capacity of each of the soil types and interpret the pH value of each soil type as given in the table.

Further to this, in question led) and e(i), majority of the candidates were able to give with reasons the most productive soil and the least productive soil.

However, in question e(ii), many candidates could not suggest ways of improving the least productive soil.

The expected answers include

Ways of improving soil type A (sandy soil)
- Addition of organic manures/fertilizers
- Addition of inorganic fertilizers
- Addition of liming material
- Fallowing
- Green manuring (Cover cropping)
- Irrigation
- Mulching
