This question was poorly attempted by the candidates. In 4(a), many candidates could not identify the illustrated equipment (i.e. egg candler, brooder, lantern/hurricane lamp and water trough/waterer/drinker). In addition, in 4 (b), majority of the candidates were unable to state the uses of the egg candler, brooder, lantern and water trough. Also, in 4(c), many candidates could not state the reactions of five-day old chicks to varying degree temperatures in the brooder.
However, in 4(d), majority of the candidates could identify the problems associated with the use of lantern in poultry production. Further to this, in 4(e) and (f), many candidates were able to identify thermometer as the instrument used to measure temperature in brooder box and; state that 21 days is the incubation period for eggs of the domestic fowls.
The expected answers include:
Identification of equipment illustrated in I, II, III and IV
I: Egg candler/Paraffin lamp candler
II: Brooder
III: Lantern/Hurricane lamp
IV: Water trough/Waterer/Drinker
Use of the equipment I, II, III and IV in chicks production
I: (Egg candler)
- To detect fertile and infertile eggs.
II: (Brooder)
- To provide warmth for young chicks (brooding).
III: (Lantern)
- To illuminate farm;
- To provide warmth for chicks.
IV: (Water trough/Waterer/Drinker)
- To supply water to birds;
- To supply drugs to birds.
Reactions of five-day old chicks to varying degree of temperatures in
equipment II
LOW
Chicks cluster under the hoover (source of heat).
OPTIMUM
Chicks spread out evenly in the brooder.
HIGH
Chicks move away from the source of heat and arrange themselves. |
