(a)(i) Name the fruit types of specimens C, D, E, F, G and H. [6 marks]
(ii) Identify the type of placentation found in each of specimens C, E, and G with reasons. [6 marks]
(b )(i) State the mode of dispersal in each of specimens C, D, E, F, G and H [6 marks]
(ii) Describe briefly how specimen D is dispersed. [3 marks]
(c)In a tabular form state four structural differences between specimens G and H [4 marks]

OBSERVATION

Many candidates scored above average on this question. Most candidates could correctly name the fruit type of specimens ClPepper, D/Castor oil, ElPea pod, F/Tridax, G/Orange and H/Coconut as well as, state the type of placentation named expected answers includes:
(ii)Types of placentation with reasons
Specimen C Pepper - Axile - Ovules are attached to central placenta
E Bean pod - Marginal - Ovules are arranged in a singled row at the margin of a vary.
G Orange - Axile - Ovules are attached to central placenta
Candidates could also state the mode of dispersal of specimens C, D, E, F, G and H but most candidates could not describe sequentially the dispersal mechanism in specimen D/castor oil. Expected answers include:
Dispersal of specimen D/Castor oil fruit
The fruit matures/ripens and dries up;
Tension is set up in its fruit wall;
Due to uneven drying of the fruit wall/pericarp dries unevenly
Fruit splits with explosion along weak lines;
Seeds are scattered.
Most candidates were able to correctly state structural differences between specimens G/Orange and H/Coconut.
