JESUS’ ENCOUNTER WITH THE FISHERMEN AT THE SEA OF GALILEE (MATT. 4:18-25; MK. 1:16-20; LK. 5:1-11)

In the Section B of this paper, this was a more popular question as many candidates were attracted to it and the performance to this question was above average. The B part was not a challenge to the candidates as they easily maxed out the full marks. However, in the A part, candidates wrote about the encounter that transpired between Jesus and the fishermen at Galilee and how he called them to be his disciple. Additional points candidates should have added were the different reportage of the synoptic accounts. Doing this would have made the candidates score the maximum obtainable marks in this question. Below are the expected additional points;

  1. According to Luke’s account, Jesus was preaching at the shore of Gennesaret Lake where he noticed two empty anchored boats whose owners were washing/mending their nets.

  2. He entered the empty boat and asked Peter to push the boat into the sea.

  3. Jesus asked Peter to throw his net into the sea but Peter hesitated.

  4. He told Jesus he had been toiling all night without success.

  5. He, however, obeyed Jesus and was overwhelmed by the great number of fish caught.

  6. Peter fell on his knees and confessed to Jesus that he was unworthy to be in hispresence.

  7. Jesus promised to make him a fisher of men.

  8. Luke also records that James and John witnessed this miracle, and also decided to follow Jesus.
