Christian Religious Studies Paper 2 WASSCE (PC), 2016

Question 5

(LUKE 9:57-62, LUKE 14:25-33)

  1. Highlight the requirement Jesus demanded from his would-be disciples as recorded in Luke’s gospel.
  2. State three lessons Christians can learn from such demands.

This was a popular question attempted by most candidates though; majority of the candidates that attempted it did not know the story line of the event. Most candidates were more interested in the call of the first four disciples instead of the questions which is the requirement Jesus demanded from his would-be disciples as recorded in Luke’s gospel. Expected points from candidates included:

  1. As Jesus and his disciples walked along the road, a man declared his desire to follow him anywhere he went.
  2. Jesus replied him saying, foxes have holes and birds have nests but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.
  3. Later Jesus, called another person to follow him.
  4. But the man told Jesus that he should be allowed to go and bury his father first.
  5. Jesus replied that the dead should be left to bury their own dead.
  6. Another person also desired to follow Jesus but he asked Jesus to allow him to go and say farewell to his people at home.
  7. Jesus told him that no one who puts his hand to the plough and looked back was fit for the kingdom of God.
  8. Jesus then told people who accompanied him that anyone who came to him should hate parents, children and himself so as to be a good disciple.
  9. Jesus further said that anyone who intended to build a tower should first count the cost.
  10. He should prepare well so as to be able to complete the project so that people would not mock him.
  11. Jesus again said that a King going to war should prepare adequately to fight the enemy.
  12. He finally stated that anyone who did not denounce all that he had could not be his disciple.

In part B, their performance was not all that impressive in that the lessons that can be learnt is embedded in the requirement of (a) above. Candidates were expected to list the following points:

  1. Becoming a disciple of Jesus involves challenges/difficulties.
  1. Discipleship involves giving Jesus the priority/first place in one’s life.
  2. One has to pay a price for discipleship.
  3. Discipleship involves total commitment/ Surrender/ Obedience.
  4. To follow Jesus requires self-denial, complete dedication and willingness to obey him and his course.

On the whole, candidates’ performance in this question was less impressive.
