(ACTS 1:15-26)

  1. Describe how Matthias was enrolled with the apostles.
  2. State three guidelines churches should follow in appointing leaders.

This question was unpopular as many candidates avoided it. A greater number of those who attempted it performed below average.  They were unable to outline the events that led to Peter taking leadership of the disciples after the crucifixion of Christ. Candidates were expected to point out that after Judas Iscariot had committed suicide, there was a vacuum created among the disciples which needed to be filled and the requirements that is expected of whom to take over this role. Below are the points expected from candidates:

  1. After the ascension of Jesus, Peter assumed the leadership of the early church.
  2. Peter reminded the disciples of the need to maintain the original number of twelve apostles.
  3. He made reference to the book of Psalms to support his suggestion for a replacement for Judas Iscariot who had killed himself.
  4. It was agreed that the one to replace Judas should be one of the disciples from the time of John the Baptist to the time of Jesus’ ascension.
  5. Secondly, the person should be a witness to Jesus’ resurrection.
  6. His duties would be to preach about the resurrection and cater for the needs of the Christian community.
  7. Based upon the requirements outlined, Matthias and Joseph called Barsabbas were nominated.
  8. The disciples then prayed to God.
  9. The essence of the prayer was for God to guide them choose the right person.
  10. After the prayer, they casted lots.
  11. And the lots fell on Matthias.
  12. Matthias was then enrolled as the one to replace Judas Iscariot.
