Question 9

PETER’S TEACHING ON CHRISTIANS’ ATTITUDE TO CIVIL AUTHORITIES (1 PETER 2:13-17)

Observation

This question was popular among the candidates. The part B was better answered by the candidates as most of them used their knowledge about civic education to answer this question. They also drew other reasons through their experiences gotten from the activities happening in the contemporary society.
In the part A, candidates used their initiative in answering this question by pointing out that Christians should be civil and diplomatic in dealing with authorities.  Candidates could have answered in a better way as outlined below;

  1. A Christian should be law abiding and have respect for constituted authority.
  2. Such Christians should discharge their civic duties and responsibilities promptly to all men.
  3. Peter taught that a good Christian should submit himself to every human institution and respect them, including the authorities of the state, e.g Governors etc.
  4. For it is God who appointed kings to punish wrong doers and to reward those who do good.
  5. He stressed that Christians’ good behaviour, would put to shame the ignorance of foolish men.
  6. As men who have been liberated from the curse of the law, a good Christian citizen should live as a freeman without using his freedom as a pretext for evil.
  7. But he should live as an obedient servant of God.
  8. Besides, he should respect every man and love the brotherhood of believers.
  9. Furthermore, he should fear God and honour the king and rulers.
