Question 4

  1. Explain oxidation in dyeing?
    (b)       Mention four types of fabric on which oxidation can be effective and permanent.
    (c)        State four stages in fabric decoration before oxidation.

Observation

The question was popular among the candidates and most of the candidates performed very well in it.  Most candidates were able to give the appropriate response to the question, evidence that they were taught on oxidation in dyeing. The following points were given by the candidates to obtain the maximum marks:

(a)             Oxidation in dyeing:
It is a process of exposing fabric to air to allow fastening of dye and chemical substances after dyeing.  This process is achieved by spreading the fabric under shade before rinsing.
(b)  Fabrics on which oxidation can be effective and permanent:

  • Cotton e. g. Guinea brocade; Gaskiya; Jeans; Kaduna; Funtua; Aswani; Khaki.
  • Linen.
  • Rayon.
  • Wool.
  • Baft e.g. Teru, Calico.
  • Jute.

(c)  Stages in fabric decoration before oxidation:

  • Sourcing/sorting of materials.
  • Desizing of fabric.
  • Making of sketches and planning of designs.
  • Tying/waxing/transfer of motif on fabric.
  • Preparation of dye bath/solution.
  • Dipping of fabric into the dye bath/solution.
  • Removal of fabric from the dye bath/solution.
  • Removal of twine from the tied fabric.
