Question 6

  1. List three materials for printing.
    (b)       Mention three similarities between printing and batikng.
    (c)        Identify three differences between tie-dyeing and printing.

Observation

Despite the fact that the question was popular among the candidates, their performance was only average. Some of the candidates were not able to show the similarities and differences between printing and batiking,  and printing and tie-dyeing respectively. They should have responded thus:

  • Materials for printing:

Mesh; Exposing chemicals (e.g Bichromate and emulsion); Retarder; Binder; Turpentine; Cardboard/Drawing paper/Tracing paper; Oil/Kerosene; Chalk/Pencil; Motif; Fabric/Cloth; Thread; Ink; Pigment/Colour; Masking tape/Cellotape; Foam; Soap/Detergent; Pomade/Petroleum jelly; Rag; Water; Lacquer; Thinner.

  • Similarities between printing and batiking:
  • Motif formation are necessary for both.
  • Water is needed for both during production.
  • Definite designs/patterns are achieved in both.
  • Both can retain many colours.
  • Fabric is used for both.
  • The use of paper/cardboard for stenciling and sketches is necessary for both.
  • Stamps and stencils are required to create designs/patterns in both.
  • Both are ideal for wall hanging.
  • Both are fabric decoration techniques.
  • Both are used for clothing, apparel and furnishing.
  • Both are used for festivities/carnivals.
  • Expression of skills and creativities are prominent in both.
  • Both create job opportunities.

  • Differences between tie-dyeing  and printing:

S/N

TIE-DYEING

PRINTING

i

Patterns/designs are created on fabric only.

Patterns/designs are created on both fabric and paper.

ii

Patterns/designs are created directly on fabrics by any suitable tying technique/method.

Patterns/designs are created on stencils or stamps before they are registered onto a surface like fabric or paper.

iii

Production is only done manually.

Production is done manually and mechanically.

iv

It has limited designs in production.

Multiple designs are achieved.

v

Accidental designs/patterns are  achieved.

Definite designs/patterns are achieved.

vi

Production takes less time.

Production requires longer time.

vii

Dye is used for production.

Ink is used for production.

viii

Freehand sketching of design is not required.

Freehand sketching of design is required.

ix

Motif formation is not required to create/form designs/patterns.

Motif is necessary to create/form designs/patterns.
