Question 2
  1. Figure 1 is a simple d.c. circuit.

                  Using Figure 1, calculate:
         (i)          voltage drop across the resistors;
         (ii)       I1;
         (iii)      I2;
         (iv)      the power dissipated in the circuit.

OBSERVATION

 The expected answers were:
 (a)(i)   V = 1.5 V  +  1.5 V  =  3 V (Parallel connection)
      (ii)  I1 =
                                    =       = 0.5 A

     (iii) I2 =

            =       = 1 A

                (iv)    Power W  =    V IT
                                             =  V x (I1 + I2)                                                                                                                                           =  3 x 1.5 = 4.5 W.

             The question was on Circuit Analysis. The question was very popular with the
candidates. As reported, majority of the candidates could apply Ohm’s Law and the Kirchhoff’s Current Law required for the solutions, many still lost some marks due to their failure to correctly interpret the connection of two 3 V batteries connected in parallel to supply 3 V to the circuit. The performance was below average.
