Fisheries Paper 3, WASSCE (SC), 2019

Question 4

(a) (i) Name three parts of specimen K.
(ii) State one function of each of the parts named in 4(a)(i).
(iii) State five differences between specimens K and L.

(b) State two disadvantages of using specimen L. [15 marks]

Observation

The question was well attempted, and candidates performance was average.
In part (a), majority of the candidates were able to name the parts of specimen K. however, they were unable to state the differences between specimens K and L.

In part (b), only few candidates could state the disadvantages of using specimen L.

In part (d), majority of the candidates could not mention any other five by-products that could be derived from fish apart from specimen J. Majority of the candidates were mentioning the uses of fish instead of by-products.

The expected answers include:

(a)(i) Parts of specimen K (Gill net)
- head rope/line/float line
- float/bouy/floater
- netting material/net
- foot rope/leadline/weight line
- sinker / lead / stone/weight
- twine

(ii)Functions of the parts
Head rope – for holding the top part of the netting material
Float/floater/bouy- for keeping net suspended in water/an indicator that fish has been caught
Netting material – for trapping fish in water
Foot rope – for holding the bottom part of the netting material
Sinker / lead / stone/weight – to stretch net down to touch bottom

(iii)Difference between specimen K (gill net) and specimen L (Cast net)

Gill net

Cast net

- Not much skill is required/easy/ not complex to construct

Skill is required/not easy/ Complex to construct

- Complex/not difficult to use

Not complex/difficult to use

Passive gear

Active gear

Not much skill is required

Requires great skill

Placed vertically in water

Cast or thrown into the water

Presence of head rope

Absence/ No head rope

Presence of float

Absence/No float

Rectangular shape

Conical shape

Can be operated in all waterbodies

Can only be operated in shallow waters

Selective/capture fish of uniform sizes/target fish

Non selective/capture fish of various sizes

(b) Disadvantages of using specimen L (cast net)
- requires high skill to operate
- it is not selective/captures cell sizes
- not very efficient
- suitable only in shallow waters/not suitable in deep water
- could get stacked in woody vegetation/debris/rocky bottom.
