(a) Outline any three factors that may lead to the growth of urban settlements
(b) Describe any four functions which urban centres perform for their surrounding regions.
(c) State three problems associated with urban centres.

Observation

This was a popular question with the candidates.  The performance of the candidates was generally alright.  They needed to know the factors that leads to the growth of urban settlements namely:

- natural increase in population
- migration to advantaged areas e.g. well drained and fertile soils
- rural- urban migration
- government policies in creating new towns
- decentralization of administrative function e.g. creation of new States and LGAs
- change in administrative status e.g. a town becoming a State headquarters
- presence of economic activities e.g. mining
- industrial development
- availability of social amenities
- absence of disasters – natural or man-made
- accessibility to urban centers.
