    1. (a)Describe any three factors responsible for the dominance of light industries in developing countries.

      (b)Highlight any four advantages of the concentration of industries in urban areas of developing countries.

      (C)Outline any three disadvantages of the concentration of industries in the urban areas of developing countries.

  • This was a very unpopular question among the candidates and most of the candidates that attempted the question performed poorly.  In the (a) component of the question, some of the candidates were listing the favourable conditions for the location of industries rather than the factors responsible for the dominance of light industries in developing countries.  These factors include:

    -           inadequate capital;
    -           inadequate infrastructure/transportation network;
    -           presence of unskilled labour;
    -           availability of local raw materials;
    -           light industries are not capital intensive;
    -           inadequate managerial skills for the sustenance of heavy industries;
    -           inadequate power supply;
    -           inadequate technology;
    -           high demand for consumer goods.
