The following weaknesses were observed on the candidates’ scripts:

  (1)        Poor map work
           
Many candidates used poor maps to illustrate their answers.  Such candidates also used wrong keys on the associated maps, thus making it difficult to correctly cross match the features represented.

(2)        Mere listing of points

Some of the candidates merely listed points rather than substantiating their points with adequate explanations which made them to lose precious marks.

   (3)        Inability to cover the syllabus ahead of the examination

From the responses of the candidates to the questions, it could be deduced that some of the candidates could not cover the syllabus ahead of the examination.  This was why some of the candidates scored very low marks in some of the questions.

(4)        Illegible handwriting

Some of the candidates wrote their answers in very poor, difficult-to-read handwritings.  This made such students to score poor marks as some of the examiners were left with no option than to write “seen” on those illegible works.

4.         SUGGESTED REMEDIES TO CANDIDATES’WEAKNESSES

  (1)        Practice on map work

Candidates should practice the drawing of sketch maps of Nigeria, West Africa and Africa ahead of the examination so that they can master the art before the start of the examinations.

They should also learn how to use keys for representing features on maps.

  (2)        Explanation of points

Candidates should learn to explain their points in order to score full marks rather than mere listing of points.  

(3)        Coverage of the syllabus

Efforts should be made by the schools and the candidates to cover the syllabus ahead of the examination date.  This will put the candidates at an advantage in the course of answering the question.

  (4)        Good handwriting

Candidates should train themselves in the act of writing so that they can develop good handwritings that are clearly legible.
