Question 4

  1. Draw a sketch map of Nigeria.
  2. On the map, locate and name:

    • two areas of high population density;
    • two towns in the areas shown in 4(a)(i) above.
  3. Identify four reasons for the high population density in any of the towns shown in 4(a)(ii) above.
  4. Outline two problems of high population density in Nigeria.

 

 

Observation

The question was answered by a large proportion of the candidates and most of them
performed poorly in the (a) aspect of the question that involved map work.  They performed better in the (b) and (c) components of the question.  Some of the reasons for the high population density that were given included:

  • favourable climate;
  • natural attachment to land;
  • historical factors;
  • administrative headquarters;
  • presence of minerals;
  • presence of industries;
  • commercial activities;
  • presence of social amenities;
  • migration;
  • presence of infrastructural amenities;
  • employment opportunities;
  • port facilities;
  • good transport network;
  • educational facilities;
  • fertile soil;

 

The problems of high population density in Nigeria that could have been provided included:

  • pressure on natural resources;
  • increase in crime waves;
  • insufficient food;
  • unemployment/underemployment;
  • inadequate housing;
  • traffic congestion;
  • environmental pollution;
  • pressure on social amenities;
  • development of slums/ghettos;
  • waste management problems;
  • social unrest;
  • increase in government expenditures;
  • high cost of living/inflation;
  • easy spread of diseases;
  • increase in social vices.
