(a)   What is national interest?

(b)   Outline four objectives of your country’s foreign policy.

Observation

This was not a popular question and many of the candidates who answered the question performed below average. They failed to understand the demands of the question and scored low marks. However, the candidates were expected to write the following points in order to score high marks:

(a)  The national interest of a nation in foreign policy is the overall factors of geographic, economic, historic and socio-political issues which shape and influence her actions and reactions in the community of nations.
(b)  Objectives

  1. Respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of African state;
  2. Non- interference in the internal affairs of African States;
  3. Commitment to functional co-operation as a way of promoting African unity;
  4. Commitment to total eradication of racism and colonialism from the African continent;
  5. Promotion of international peace and security;
  6. Commitment to the principle of non-alignment;
  7. The promotion and defence of social justice, and respect for human dignity, especially the dignity of the black man;
  8. The promotion of equality and self-reliance in African and the rest of developing countries of the world;
  9. The defence of our sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity;
  10. Commitment to technological development within the country and Africa as a whole.
