(a)        Outline two aims of the Action Group (AG) in Nigeria.
(b)        State three contributions of the Action Group (AG) to Nigerian political development.

Observation

This was a popular question and well attempted by most of the candidates. The performance of the candidates who answered it was good as they really understood its demands. However, those who failed were giving skimpy answers. The candidates were expected to give the following points as answers to the question.

    1. To contest and win elections and control Western region.
    2. To provide good leadership at the centre.
    3. To cooperate and work with other nationalists towards the achievement of immediate self-government and independence for Nigeria.
    4. To cooperate and strengthen all tribal organizations in the Western Region.
    5. To organize and work with all nationalities in the Western Region within its fold, for the purpose of submitting themselves to party loyalty and discipline.
    6. To organize and provide political education for Nigerians on why they need to accept the leadership and candidates of Action Group at elections.
    7. To prepare and present to the people, acceptable programmes through its elected members in the Western House of Assembly and the Federal Legislature.
    8. To cooperate with other nationalists across the nation in the formation of a united team towards the realization of immediate self-rule in Nigeria.
    9. To work towards the growth and development of the Western Region.
    10. To promote mass literacy and education.
    1. The Action Group formed the opposition party in the House of Representatives.
    2. The party contested and won elections in the Western region/ domination of the politics of Western Region.
    3. It helped to develop Western Region.
    4. The party played significant role in the nationalist struggles for independence in Nigeria alongside other nationalists in the country.
    5. It enlightened the masses by providing political education.
    6. Action Group represented Western Region in various constitutional conferences/reforms.
    7. Action Group was in the forefront in the agitations against the 1951 constitutional reforms.
    8. It introduced free and compulsory primary education in Western Region in 1955.
    9. It produced the first Premier of Western Region.
    10. It established first regional University in the Western Region (University of Ile - Ife) in 1962, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
    11. It established farm settlement schemes across the Western Region.
    12. Built more schools- primary, modern, secondary schools and technical colleges.
    13. It awarded scholarships to students either within or outside Nigeria.
    14. It provided free medical services.
    15. It sponsored motion for self-government.
