This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. In part (a)
candidates correctly name types of taste that are detected by the tongue. In part (b Hi)
candidates could not correctly give the reason why the pituitary gland is described as a master
gland, in (b)(ii) candidates correctly named types of nerve cells responsible for transmitting
voluntary impulse. In part (c) candidates correctly stated instances when an individual may be
disallowed from donating blood.
The expected answers were as follows:
8(a) Types of taste detected by the tongue
- sweet/sugary
- bitter
- sour
- salt
(b)(i) Reason why the pituitary gland is described as a master gland
because the pituitary gland controls the activities of all other glands in the body
(ii) Types of nerve cells responsible for transmitting voluntary impulse
Sensory/afferent neuron/nerve cell
Motor/efferent neuron/nerve cell
(c) Instances when an individual may be disallowed from donating blood
- if the donor is anemic/PVC is low
if the donor is sick
if the donor is a menstruating woman
if the donor blood is diseased/named
if the donor is nursing mother
if donor blood is incompatible with that of the receiver
