Health Education Paper 3 WASSCE (SC), 2017

Question 2

The diagram below illustrates a system in humans. Study it and answer questions 2 (a), (b) and (c).

  1. (i) name the system illustrated in the diagram.  [1 mark]

(ii) name the part labeled I, II, III and IV.  [2 marks]

  1. (i) mention four injuries that could affect the part labeled I[4 marks]

(ii) state two materials that could be used in giving first Aid to part Labeled I if injured. [2 marks]

  1. State two possible movement in the part labeled III  [2 marks]

Observation

Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was poor. In part (a) (i) some candidates could not correctly identify the diagram, they wrote wrong answer such as circulatory and respiratory system. In part (a) (ii) majority could not answer it correctly, most of them wrote thus; tricep, scapula ulecranon process e.t.c. In part (b) (i) few candidates got it, many wrote wrong answer such as cuts, wound, dislocation, fracture e.t.c. In part (b) (ii) some candidates could not correctly state materials that could be used in giving first Aid to part Labeled I if injured. In part (c) most of the candidates could not correctly mention possible movement in the part labeled III, majority of the candidates wrote contraction and relaxation.
The expected answers are as follow:

2(a)(i) SYSTEM ILLUSTRATED IN THE DIAGRAM

  • muscular system/musculoskeletal system

(ii)    PARTS LABELLED
           I  -  triceps
II  -  tendon
III -  biceps
IV - ligament

(b)(i)   INJURIES THAT COULD AFFECT THE PART LABELLED I

            -     muscle tear/muscle bruise
-     muscle strain/over stretching
-     muscle fatigue/muscle cramp/muscle spasm
-     muscle pull
-     burns/scalds

(ii)        MATERIALS THAT COULD BE USED IN GIVING FIRST AID TO THE PART LABELLED I IF INJURED

  • bandage
  • cotton wool
  • ointment/balm

 (c)      POSSIBLE MOVEMENTS IN THE PART LABELLED III
-    flexion/bending

            -    extension/straightening
