Question 11

Outline any five development programmes undertaken in Nigeria after independence

Observation

This was another popular question and majority of the candidates who attempted It were able to write the required number of points.  However, they could not explain the points to fetch them the maximum marks obtainable.  The general performance in this question was above average.  Some of the points raised included:

  1. The Universal Primary education (UPE) was introduced.  This resulted in increased enrolment at primary schools and necessitated the setting up of more teachers colleges for teacher training and expansion of secondary schools to absorb the UPE products – Building and installation of science laboratories; importation of technical equipment from overseas countries;
  2. Tertiary institutions including Colleges of Education, Research Institutes, Universities and Polytechnics were established to boost higher education.  Scholarships were also awarded especially Technical Education scholarships for overseas programmes to train manpower;
  3. National Policy education (6-3-3-4) was introduced with new emphasis on Science, Vocational and technical education at all levels of education.  The use of indigenous languages for instruction in primary schools was encouraged;
  4. Cultural revival by organizing the National Festivals for Arts and Culture, involvement in the FESTAC 1977 and establishment of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Culture
  5. Housing schemes were embarked on by both the federal and state governments.  These included the FESTAC village in Lagos, Shagari low cost houses in all states, and the individual state governments housing schemes;
  6. Promotion of various sporting activities through the organization of National Sports Festivals, introduction of various sports competitions setting up sporting bodies and the construction of new stadia in various parts of Nigeria, etc.
