Question1

    (a)        Name any three sources used in writing the history of Nigeria.
    (b)        Outline any four disadvantages of Oral Tradition as a source of African                                                     history.

Observation

This question was very unpopular among the candidates and the few ones who attempted                 it performed poorly. It required the candidates to explain the features family, linage group, the village composition, religious aspect, role of secret societies and age grades. Many of the candidates discussed the features adequately while few of them listed their points without further explanation. Specifically, the candidates were expected to state the following points:
           
            (a)        (i)         Oral Tradition.                                                           
(ii)        Archaeology.
(iii)       Written History.
(iv)       Linguistics.
(v)        Ethnography/Anthropology.
(vi)       Numismatics.
(vii)      Ethnomusicology.
(viii)     Ethnobotany.
(ix)       Serology.
(x)        Art Forms.
(xi)       Paleography.

(b)        (i)         Oral Tradition lacks chronological order.
(ii)        It lacks specific time frame.
(iii)       The information may be distorted even within a short time.
(iv)       It lacks precision.
(v)        Exaggeration of facts and events.
(vi)       People who are knowledgeable about the events may have forgotten vital                                       information with the passage of time.
(vii)      The passing away of a narrator may lead to a gap in the source.
(viii)     The narrator may be biased.
(ix)       It may be expensive.
