Insurance WASSCE (SC), 2019

CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

  •  Many of the candidates could not properly apply their knowledge of the principles of insurance to problem-solving in real life scenarios. They performed poorly in the question on case study as some of them incorrectly transposed the meaning of proximate cause for remote cause and vice versa.

  • Some of the candidates demonstrated poor understanding of the rudiments of insurance.  As a result, they could not satisfactorily attempt related questions as reflected in questions three (3) and five (5) respectively.

  • Failure of the candidates to adhere to the rubrics as many of them only listed where  the questions required them to state or list and explain hence, they lost valuable marks.

  • Some of the candidates exhibited insufficient knowledge of calculations in insurance and thereby lose some marks.

  •

    SUGGESTED REMEDIES

The candidates should be encouraged to study standard and comprehensive texts as recommended by the Council in their preparation for the examination.

  • The teachers should endeavour to cover all aspects of the examination syllabus with emphasis on practice questions on case studies and calculations in insurance so as to familiarize the candidates with examination scenarios and enhance their performance.

  • The candidates should endeavour to always adhere to rubrics and learn to pay attention to details in future examinations.

  • More higher institutions of learning should introduce courses in Insurance for the training of sufficient teachers in this field which will in turn enable the schools employ more qualified teachers for this subject.

  •
