(a)        What are safety measures?
(b)        List five safety measures required in a leathercraft workshop.

Observation

 

This question was also popular among candidates, most of whom scored high marks. The question required candidates to explain safety measures, list five safety measures required in a leathercraft workshop and to state four ways of maintaining leathercraft tools in the (a), (b) and (c) parts of the question respectively. Most candidates were able to explain safety measures, list the safety measures required in a leathercraft workshop but few of the candidates mistook maintenance of leathercraft machine for leathercraft tools . Candidates were expected to answer thus to score maximum marks:


  1. Safety measures are steps embarked upon in order to avoid accidents or injuries in working environments OR it is the provision of a conducive environment that minimizes the occurrence of accidents.

  2.             (i)         wearing of hand gloves.

              (ii)        wearing of safety boots.
              (iii)       workshops should be well ventilated.
              (iv)       electrical appliances should be switched off when not in use.
              (v)        keeping fire extinguishers in accessible places.
              (vi)       putting on nose covering.
              (vii)      tools should be kept in the appropriate place when not in use.
              (viii)     wearing of overalls.
              (ix)       avoid using machines that need repairs.
              (x)        oil or lubricate machines when necessary.
              (xi)       dangerous parts of machines should be covered.
              (xii)      unauthorised persons should not be allowed to operate machines.
              (xiii)     caution/safety signs should be displayed at workshops.
              (xiv)     chemicals should always be covered after use.
              (xv)      avoid eating and drinking in the workshop.


(c)        (i)        tools should always be cleaned and dried.
            (ii)       tools should be oiled when necessary.
            (iii)      tools should be kept in the toolbox or in appropriate places.
            (iv)      tools should be stored away from moisture to prevent rust.
            (v)        worn-out or faulty parts should be replaced regularly.
            (vi)      tools should be sharpened when necessary.
            (vii)      damaged tools should not be put to use.
