Literature-In-English Paper 2 Nov/Dec 2015

Question 3

       ADICHIE CHIMAMANDA NGOZI: Purple Hibiscus

Consider Kambili as an admirable character.

Observation

Many candidates attempted this question. Only a few of them wrote scantily on Kambili’s character. Some even referred to her as a male child, rather than a female.

The following points should be well developed by the candidates:

  • Kambili is the narrator of the novel and all major actions are experienced through her. She is deeply religious, highly intelligent and is also a hard-working student.
  • Kambili is endowed with a lot of strength; she possesses a fine athletic figure which imprsses both Father Amadi and Aunty Ifeoma deeply.
  • Kambili is good-natured and has sound, humane relationships with all and sundry. Her intimacy with Aunty Ifeoma is perhaps even deeper than that of her own family.
  • She is submissive and obedient to her parents without question. Her relationship with her brother, Jaja is intimate; they understand each other perfectly and can speak with their eyes.

Candidates’ performance in this question was good.
