Literature-In-English Paper 2 Nov/Dec 2015

Question 7

ERNEST HERMINGWAY: The Old Man and the Sea

Consider the relationship between Santiago and Manolin before the old man sets out to catch the big fish.

Observation

A good number of candidates attempted this question, but they wrote generally on the relationship between Santiago and Manolin without limiting it to their relationship before Santiago sets out to catch the big fish.

Candidates were expected to mention the following points among others:

  • The strong bond of friendship between Santiago and Manolin until the boy’s parents decide Santiago is a salao, so the boy is removed to another boat.
  • Despite Santiago’s reputation as a salao, Manolin still holds the old man dear.
  • Manolin who has a heart of gold, anticipates Santiago’s needs and offers to help him in diverse ways. He encourages and supports him both materially and emotionally.

Candidates’ performance in the question was fair.
