Observation

At Lantern Yard, the innocent was found guilty. Godfrey abandons Eppie with her mother but later comes to claim her, Silas walks away from the Church only to go back later.  The loss of Silas’ gold later turned out to be a blessing.  Dunstan steals gold which ironically kills him in a pit.  Dunstan’s blackmail at Godfrey leads to the acquisition of wild life (the horse) which dies and provides opportunity to steal Marner’s money.

Most candidates were able to identify irony in the novel and the question was fairly attempted.
