Literature-In-English Paper 3 Nov/Dec 2015

Question 1

    KOBINA SEKYI: The Blinkards

Examine the significance of the court case in the play.

Observation

A good number of candidates attempted this question. Rather than discuss the significance of the court case, they gave mere narrations that were not relevant to the question.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

  • The court case epitomizes the conflict of cultures that is the theme of the play.
  • The court brings the conflict of cultures to a resolution. Lawyer Onyimdze restores the relevance of traditional marriage in the scheme of things.
  • The court case also raises the consciousness of the anglicised characters about the relevance of their own culture, even in such other matters as food and clothing.
  • Mrs Borofosem’s change of heart as she conceded that Mr Onyimdze “was right all along the line”.

Candidates’ performance was poor.
