Literature-In-English Paper 3 WASSCE (PC), 2019

Question 3

FRANK OGODO OGECHE: Harvest of Corruption

To what extent can Aloho’s tragedy be blamed on the society?

Observation

This was a popular question but majority of the candidates gave a character sketch of the events that led to her death and were able to point out those who were to be blamed without making mention of the society.

Candidates were expected to discuss the following points:

  • Aloho’s failure to secure a job and how frustration drives her into the path of Ochuole.
  • Aloho’s own contribution to her tragedy.
  • The significance of the network of corruption: the role of Chief Ade-Amaka, DCOP, Odili, Madam Hoha, etc.
  • Aloho’s innocence and naivety and her exploitation by Ochuole in getting her employed in the first place.
  • The very nature of society; what it takes to succeed or to belong.

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
