• The relationship between husband and wife and their treatment of their step-son and son.
• The attitude of Mr. Hardcastle towards Tony.
• The attitude of Mrs. Hardcastle towards Tony.
• Tony’s contribution towards his treatment by both Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle.
• The couple’s individual regard for Tony as he is.
