Observation

This was not a popular question with the candidates. Candidates failed to give the central theme of pervasive corruption and its negative consequences on society and individuals. While they were able to state the dramatic elements, most candidates did not discuss how the elements relate to the development of the plot.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• Statement of the central theme.


• The use of allusion, relevance to the plot and examples.


• Use of soliloquy, relevance to the plot and examples.


• Use of symbolism, relevance to the plot and examples.


• Use of irony, relevance to the plot and examples.


• Foreshadowing, its relevance to the plot and instances.

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
