1.  (a)        State two safety precautions to be observed when using a marking-out table.
(b)        List two tools that can be used to find the centre of a rod.
(c)        The sketch below is a type of furnace.

            (i)         Identify the furnace.
            (ii)        Identify the parts labeled J, K, L and M.
            (d)       List three types of vices.

Most of the parts of this question were not well attempted by the candidates. Question 1(a) is asking for safety precaution when using marking-out table and not general workshop safety. The required responses are as follows:

1(a)      -     Always clean the surface after use.

  • Tools should not be dropped on its surface.
  • The table should not be used for chiseling.
  • Avoid hammering on the table.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on the table.

1(b)      -     Tools that can be used to find the centre of a rod are:

  • centre square;
  • centre finder;
  • odd-leg calipers.

 

 

1(c) (i)  Most of the candidates could not identify the furnace shown in the sketch correctly.
The sketch shown is a cupola furnace.

            (ii)        J -  fire brick lining
K -  steel casing
L -  pouring spout
M -  charging door     

1(d)     Types of vices

  • hand vice;
  • leg vice;
  • machine vice;
  • bench vice;
  • engineer’s vice;
  • pin vice.
