Metal Works 2, WASSCE (PC 2ND), 2018

Question 3

(a) (i) Sketch a flat file.

(ii) Label any three parts of the sketch in 3(a)(i).
(b) State three causes of casting defects.
(c) Explain the meaning of the term final solution of an artefact in design process.

Observation

Some of the candidates had wrong sketches while some had poor sketches. Some candidates could not label three parts of a flat file. Most of the candidates could not correctly explain final solution in design process. The required responses to these questions are given below:

  1. Sketching a Flat File

(b)  Stating three causes of casting defects

  1. Faulty pattern
  2. Poor casting design
  3. Faulty mould
  4. Incorrect pouring
  5. Hasty removal of castings
  6. poor venting

  1. Explaining the meaning of Final Solution of an artefact in a design process

Final solution of an artefact in a design process is the refined state of the selected solution which satisfies the design specification.
