Question 2

(a) Make a sketch of a pole ladder and label two of its major parts.

(b) List ten precautions that an operative should observe when using a pole ladder.

Observation

This question was averagely popular among the candidates. Due to the lack of proper exposure of the candidates to the subject practically, the performance of the candidates varied. Some performed fairly while some others performed poorly by drawing and labelling the ladder inappropriately. Candidates were expected to provide some of the following as answers to the question:

i. The distance between the wall and the foot of the ladder should not be less than ΒΌ of the height of the ladder.

ii. The ladder should be free of any structured defect.

iii. When it is erected movement of people around should be restricted.

iv. Its feet should be secured firmly to the ground.

v. Always face the ladder while climbing and coming down

vi. A pole ladder above 30ft (9 meters) should be used.

vii. Never stand ladder on uneven, soft or loose ground.

viii. Never lean or reach out too much when working on a ladder.

ix. Always hang the paint kettle on the rung of the ladder with a hook.

x. Avoid placing the ladder against a window frame

xi. Allow someone to support the ladder when using it in front of a door.

xii. Two operatives should not use a pole ladder at the same time.

xiii. Hold the ladder firmly when working.

xiv. Do not climb beyond the last three rungs on the ladder.
