(a) Define finish in decorative painting.

(b) Highlight six differences between matt and gloss finish.

Observation

The question was popular among the candidates. Most of them obviously have basic understanding that were poorly presented. This made them to loose substantial marks. Candidates were expected to highlight some of the following points in their answers:

 

(a) it is the third/final coat in a paint system (decorative painting) which provides the required colour and texture to a surface.

- Matt paint dries faster than gloss

- Gloss has sheen while matt gives a flat non

- shine finish

- Matt paint has less spreading capacity than gloss finish

- Stain on gloss paint is easier to remove than on matt paint.

- Matt paint is more suitable for use in interior paintings than gloss paint.

- Gloss paint has higher durability than matt paint

- Gloss paint can be retouched when wet while matt will show brush/roller marks when retouched.
